Preview: A 15-Item Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Want to look stylish and warm in the cold winter? For my winter capsule wardrobe, I’m creating 30 winter looks with 15 clothing items, matching with shoes and accessaries. These outfits will be suitable for the casual office days, weekends and even holiday parties!

Tops – 6 Pieces

1. Eileen Fisher – Tencel Marino Striped Top (XS)

I got this relaxed top from Nordstrom Rack in regular size XS, so the sleeves are about 2 inches passed my wrists. Since the petite size was not available and I wanted a casual look, it didn’t bother me to just roll up the sleeves a bit.

2. Satva – Tia Sweater (XS)

This open back sweater is made from 100% organic cotton (also available in black). It’s soft, cozy, and has a touch of sexiness. Pair it with racer back bras for a weekend look. Or, if you want more coverage, try layering camisoles inside.

3. Amour Vert – Lux Turtle Neck Top (XS)

Made from Modal® fibers, this soft long sleeve turtle neck tee can easily be dressed up or down. This top sold out like hotcakes.

4. 100% Wool Top (handed down from my mom)

Maybe the most sustainable way to style oneself is to use what’s already there. Shop your own closet, shop secondhand, borrow from or exchange clothes with a friend or a family member.

As a cultural melting pot, NYC provides many unique finds in numerous local thrift stores. Simply Google “nyc clothing thrift stores”, and you will see a long list of stores with different personalities to match your own.

For people who want to buy or sell secondhand fashion online, I personally have had a very good experience shopping on ThredUP ($10 gift card here), and selling on Tradesy ($20 coupon here).

5. thredUP – Theory Wool Sweater (XS)

I got this sweater in new condition with tags on, and paid under $50 for this otherwise $300 sweater. #whyithrift

You may get yours here from Saks Off 5th, or better, find a similar one on ThredUP, and get a $10 gift card if you are new to this online consignment store.

6. Reformation – Ingrid Sweatshirt (XS)

Made from 100% recycled cotton and polyester fiber. This lovely oversized sweatshirt is from Reformation, a stylish Californian eco friendly brand.

Bottoms & Dresses – 7 Pieces

1. Ecoleco – Striped Cotton Wool Blend Pants (one size, waist altered)

This is another unique item from the Shanghainese eco-friendly brand. I love the pinstripes, the raw edged hems, and the heavy-weight fabric that’s soft to the touch.

2. Ecoleco – Wool Skirt (one size)

This eco friendly Shanghainese brand (健康生活馆) has many stores in China. I visited one in Chengdu. Their clothing is mostly one size, and the fit is very petite friendly! If you are in China, it’s worth visiting one near you.

3. A-line Floral Front Zip Skirt (XS)

This skirt is from Vero Moda, a brand I’d normally avoid if I can find better alternatives from more sustainable brands.

4. Ecoleco – Black Cotton Wool Blend Pants (one size)

When you want to forego the tight legging pants or jeans, why not change your silhouette and put on some loose fit pants. If you find the right pair, they can be as comfortable as sweatpants, yet also suitable for office settings at the same time.

5. Legging Pants (2P)

These pants are from LOFT, a brand I used to like for petite bottoms. Nowadays, I try to avoid buying new from them, unless purchasing them as secondhand. If you don’t know yet, you can find many like-new secondhand items from companies like ThredUP. Take a peek at all the “New with Tags” petite size LOFT pants and get a $10 gift card if you are new to ThredUP.

6. Icicle – Striped Wool Sweater Dress (size 4/160mm)

This sweater dress is from a sustainable Chinese fashion brand based in Shanghai. Take a look at this Icicle store I visited in Chengdu a few months ago. Whenever I’m traveling, I like to squeeze out some time to visit local eco friendly and thrift stores. They are my choice of souvenir shops.

7. People Tree – Candace Dress (8UK)

This flowy dress from People Tree is made from Tencel® and organic cotton. It fits longer on me than it shows on the model, which is expected. The dress hits around my mid calf like a midi dress.

Outerwear – 2 Pieces

1. Patagonia – Downtown Down Jacket (XS)

Searched high and low for a down jacket that is not too boxy, so I was very happy to find this Downtown Down Jacket with a trendier design from the sporty Patagonia. It is insulated with Traceable Down (third-party-verified, non-live-plucked, and non-force-fed duck down). The current version for the Downtown Down Jacket is filled with recycled down, and comes in poppy colors other than black.

2. Down Coat (160cm/80)

This long coat is from Vero Moda, a brand I’d normally avoid, but I got this one during traveling due to bad planning and cold weather. However, I really like the design and can see myself using it for years to come. The side pockets are fleece lined, and they keep my hands warm even without gloves. The coat almost reaches my ankle, making me feel super protected while walking on the windy NYC streets.

And…that’s a wrap! How do you like these 15 selections? Check out my previous post on how to build your own capsule wardrobe. Hope you can enjoy the ease and happiness from owning a minimalist wardrobe.
