Capsule Wardrobe Lookbook Summer 2017 + Guide to Build Your Own 夏季胶囊衣橱完整穿搭展示

18 items = 31 looks/ 18样单品31种搭配

I’m happy to show you the complete 31 looks for my first capsule wardrobe! This capsule contains 5 tops, 5 bottoms, 1 dress, 1 cardigan, 3 pairs of shoes and 3 bags, totaling 18 items. For details about these items, check out my previous post, and for additional photos of every outfit, check out my instagram.

If you like my capsule wardrobe and want to create your own, check out my guide below:

  1. Rough Selection
Keeping in mind what season you are choosing the clothes for, select out a roughly even amount of tops and bottoms from your closet first – about 5-15 in each category. Then for dresses and outerwear, choose about 1-5 in each category. Make sure you like each item (you look good in it; it fits you well; #sparkjoy) For reference, I had initially selected 12 tops, 13 bottoms, 3 dresses and 2 outerwear/cardigans in this step.
  2. Best of the Best
Among all the clothes you picked out, do you have the same ones in different colors? If so, my suggestion is to keep only one color of the same design, in order to give your capsule wardrobe more variety. For the same reason, if you have items that are very similar in color, pattern, or design/cut, consider keeping just one of them. For reference, I narrowed down to 8 tops, 8 bottoms, 2 dresses and 1 cardigan at this stage.
  3. Match Maker
After narrowing your options, hang them all up or lay them on a flat surface by category. This is so you can clearly see the clothes. Next, select a top and put it above a bottom, and see if they look good together. Then with the same top, see how many bottoms it can be paired with. Write down the number and move on to the next top. You can do this quickly without trying anything on to save time. When you have the “scores” for each top, keep the ones that score the highest. This is when you decide how many you want to keep. I kept 5 tops.

Now you are ready to do the same matching game with the bottoms. Select a bottom and put it below each top you have decided to keep. Then write down the “scores”. Do the same for all the bottoms and keep the ones that scored the highest. I kept 5 bottoms.

Next, for dresses and outerwear, see which ones can be matched with the tops/bottoms you have decided to keep. Can the dress be used as a top sometimes? Can the dress be worn with another top over it or under it? Can the outerwear/cardigan be a top by itself? These are some questions you can ask yourself if you are having a difficult time deciding. I kept 1 dress and 1 cardigan.

  4. Shoes and Bags
Neutral colored shoes and bags are capsule wardrobes’ best friends. I chose 3 pairs of shoes and 3 bags that can be mixed and matched. I consider bags to be a part of a complete outfit since I usually go out the door with a bag.

Build a Capsule Wardrobe from Your Own Closet: 18 Pieces = 31 Outfits for Work and Weekends

Do you want to get dressed quickly in the morning and always look stylish? Do you have a full wardrobe of clothes but still don’t know what to wear? Well, maybe you can take some time over the weekend and build a capsule wardrobe out of what you already have! By doing so, you can see what you really need and love, and what you can let go of while decluttering your space. Meanwhile, shopping your own closet is fun, sustainable and your wallet will thank you too.

A capsule wardrobe contains minimal items that can be mixed and matched for maximum style possibilities. With that in mind, I decided to experiment with 18 pieces to create 31 different looks throughout August. These 18 pieces include 12 clothing items, 3 pairs of shoes, and 3 bags, excluding accessories such as belts, jewelry and sunglasses.

My capsule contains half of what I currently have for summer. This small collection of clothing and accessories makes it easy for me to swap out or replace any items. Try digging through your own closet to discover a capsule wardrobe that speaks to you. Have fun and good luck!

→The rules I set for myself for this experiment are simple:
1. No shopping for clothing/shoes/accessories in August, meaning byebye to end of season summer sales.
2. The capsule is for both work and weekends, as I work in a casual environment.
3. Only 1 – 2 additional accessories allowed for each look.

I’ll be sharing my 31 outfits on my Instagram, please follow for daily updates! A complete “lookbook” for all 31 outfits will be available on August 31st on this blog as well. 😀
